On June 7th, 1974, the New Orleans Jazz were admitted as an franchise into the NBA. The name was selected because of its definition in the dictionary: collective improvisation. The most notable player to play for the Jazz during their short short stay in New Orleans was legendary LSU basketball star 'Pistol' Pete Maravich. In 1979 the Jazz played their final season in New Orleans before moving the Salt Lake City.
